FINAL PRODUCT

what is umbo?

UMBO is a lamp that is shipped as a single flat piece of plywood, allowing for easy construction without need for adhesive. It uses living hinges to create a flowing, radial pattern.

what was my goal?

Since this is my first official illustration job, I wanted to do my best to establish a distinct style. Primarily though, I wanted to help out the author with her goal and to have fun with the illustrations.

brainstorming

I started my process with a simple mood board and correlating quadrant analysis.

living hinges

I knew I wanted to utilize living hinges in my design, as it opened up possibilities for more organic forms:

  • I created my own living hinge pattern

  • problem: it sucked and didn’t bend enough

  • solution: I tested free pre-existing templates until I found the pattern that bent in the way I needed

prototyping

  • I made a single, mid-fidelity prototype out of cardboard before I starting working with the final material, birch plywood

  • After this, most of my prototyping focused on the frame and the “gear” pieces that would make up the interior of the lamp

  • This resulted in a myriad of failed attempts and subsequent tweaks to the design

  • My initial sketches made sure to include different types of living hinges

  • They focused heavily on organic forms, copying structures from plants, fruits, and other existing lamps
